THE GRANDMASTER - WONG KAR WAI

Cina in the '30 years: hard times because China is under the Japanese occupation.

The story is about IpMan which take place of Gong Yutian, one of the founder of martial arts.

The movie focus on martial fights and their spread and the love affair between Ipman and Gong Er,daughter of Gong Yutian. The love burn after a beautiful and coreographical fight that seem they were making love. The high esteem between them is so strong that they start writing letters and talking about fighting and poetry. Gong Er life is characterized by apprenticeship of kung fu, the technique of “64 hands” and a life made of sacrifices persuing the honor of the father.

The story is difficult to follow in total also because of some important cuts.

There are flash backs of Gong Er which dedicate her life to revenge her father's death. The theme of revenge we can find in lots of asian movies such as japanese Shurayukihime -“Lady Snowblood” and Tarantino with Kill Bill. The meeting between Gong Er and her enemy is next to a platform of a railway and in my opinion is one of the movie's best scene.

Another theme a lot seen in Wong Kar Wai's movies is the impossible love told with a masterpiece musical soundtrack very sad and evocative. We can see this also in other movies such as In the Mood for Love and 2046.

The photography is amazing and is like a fluid like the fight coreography art directed by Yeun Wo Ping who worked also for Matrix and Kill Bill.

The actors are marvelous and the setting is stunning.

I am a follower of Wong Kar Wai's movies so for this my vote is 8.

Siamo nella Cina degli anni 30, anni difficili dopo l'occupazione giapponese.

La storia è quella di IpMan che subentra nell'insegnamento delle arti marziali al vecchio maestro, Gong Yutian. Il film si concentra sui combattimenti , la loro diffusione e sul rapporto d'amore-stima che si instaura tra IpMan e la figlia di Gong Yutian, Gong Er. Tale è la loro passione nell'arte del combattimento che assume il significato di una storia d'amore. A distanza di tempo mantengono una relazione fatta di lettere appassionate, nate dall'unico incontro che hanno avuto, un combattimento in onore del vecchio padre di Gong Er. La vita di quest'ultima infatti si concentra sull'intenso apprendistato del kung fu, della tecnica delle 64 mani e una vita fatta di sacrifici.

La trama è molto complessa poiché il film ha subito dei tagli e non è sempre facile seguire i flash back temporali. I temi ripresi dal regista sono gli amori impossibili raccontati tramite una colonna sonora struggente ed evocativa. Importante è anche il tema della vendetta intrapreso da Gong Er contro un nemico di suo padre. Questo scopo sconvolgerà le sue scelte della sua vita come il non sposarsi e avere una famiglia. L'arte del Kung fu richiede infatti costanza e sacrificio. Questo della vendetta è un tema proposto da diversi registi orientali come il giapponese Fujita Toshiya nel suo Lady Snowblood o anche Tarantino con Kill Bill. L'incontro tra Gong Er e il suo nemico avviene presso i binari di una ferrovia e forse è una delle scene più belle del film.

La fotografia è stupenda, fluida come lo è la coreografia dei combattimenti di Yeun Wo Ping, coreaografo cinese che ha lavorato anche per Matrix e Kill Bill.

Attori impeccabili e scenografie d'alta classe.

Sono un appassionata dei film del regista percui merita un 8.
